Andrew Sykes MCGI
UK Mechanical Seal Consultant

Andrew Sykes MCGI is one of the UK's most experienced independent mechanical seal consultants. He founded Acumen Seals & Pumps Ltd in 1999 and has spent 36 years solving sealing problems across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, defence, food and beverage, water treatment, oil and gas, and power generation. He started on the shop floor ,a coded welder and fabricator with full City & Guilds qualifications in TIG, MIG, and stick welding, qualified to ASME IX, and an HNC in Materials Technology with a National Award , built his technical knowledge from the ground up. That background means he understands how equipment actually behaves in the field, not just how it looks on a datasheet. Most of his customers have been with him for over 26 years. In this industry, that's not sentiment. That's a performance record.

MCGI Level 7 Leadership & Management (Master's equivalent) | HNC Materials Technology with National Award | City & Guilds TIG, MIG & Stick Welding | ASME IX Coded Welder | 36 years field experience | International technical trainer

"Andrew brought a level of product knowledge and industry credibility that is genuinely difficult to find at Divisional Director level. He identified and progressed more than £1.2 million in qualified opportunities within the first quarter, across 38 accounts."

Areas of Specialist Expertise

  • Mechanical seal design, supply, fitting, specification and failure analysis. This is the core of what I do. From initial specification through to supply, installation, and post-failure investigation .I cover the full lifecycle. If a seal is failing repeatedly, I find out why. If you need a seal specifying for a difficult duty, I get it right first time. No distributor bias. No catalogue pushing. Just the right seal for the application.
  • FFKM and perfluoroelastomer specification. Most suppliers will sell you FFKM when FKM would do the job. I'll tell you which grade you actually need, why, and what it will cost if you get it wrong.
  • API 682 compliance. Seal selection, flush plan specification, and compliance auditing. I've worked to this standard across hundreds of applications. If your installation isn't compliant or your flush plan isn't matched to your duty, I'll find it.
  • DEF-STAN 02-337. Elastomer selection for UK defence applications. One of very few independent consultants in the UK with hands-on experience of this standard.
  • NORSOK M710. Qualification of non-metallic sealing materials for subsea and offshore duties. If your supplier can't evidence M710 compliance, you need a second opinion before you commit.
  • USP Class VI and FDA-compliant elastomer selection. Pharmaceutical and food-grade sealing where the wrong material choice isn't just expensive ,it's a batch failure or a regulatory problem. I specify it right first time.
  • Mechanical seal failure analysis. Using the SCAN framework, I find the actual cause of repeated failures, not just the symptom. If the same seal keeps failing in the same pump, the answer isn't a better seal. It's a closer look at what's really happening.
  • Technical training and courses. Six programmes built entirely from 36 years of real-world experience ,nothing borrowed from a textbook. Covering technical leadership, decision making, mindset, sales performance, and AI-powered sales pipelines. Delivered to engineers, technical sales teams, and leaders who need to perform under pressure. Available on-site, remotely, or as self-paced programmes.
  • Sealing Excellence Programme. Delivered internationally in Sweden, Austria, Ireland, and the Philippines. One-day intensive training that turns engineers and sales teams into people who can specify, sell, and problem-solve with confidence.

Career Background

Andrew began his career as a coded welder and fabricator, earning full City & Guilds qualifications in TIG, MIG, and stick welding, qualified to ASME IX. That hands-on foundation, combined with an HNC in Materials Technology with National Award ,gave him a level of practical engineering understanding that most consultants simply don't have. He knows how metal behaves under pressure, at temperature, and in aggressive chemistry. Not from a textbook. From doing the work. He moved into the sealing industry and built a specialist sealing business from scratch ,which was subsequently acquired by J A Harrison. He then founded Acumen Seals & Pumps Ltd in 1999 on a single principle: an independent specialist with no manufacturer loyalty will always give better advice than a distributor with a catalogue target. Since then he has delivered the Sealing Excellence Programme internationally in Sweden, Austria, Ireland, and the Philippines, and has maintained a distribution partnership through Assistco in the Philippines for over 20 years.

Training and Consultancy

Andrew offers a one-day intensive technical training programme "From First Hello to Confident Technical Answer ,in One Day" ,at £1,500 per day, delivered on-site or remotely. He also offers fixed-fee failure analysis consultancy and API 682 specification reviews.
