What's inside the seal
- Spring: pushes the seal faces together.
- Rubber bellows: seals on the shaft and lets the face float.
- Seal faces: lapped flat to a fraction of a micron.
- Stationary seat: held in the pump on two O-rings.
How flat is a seal face?
After lapping, seal faces are checked under monochromatic light against an optical flat. The light bands reveal any unevenness in the face. Each band marks a height difference of about 0.0003 mm under the light used, far too fine to see by eye.
What can still make a seal fail?
Dry running is the big one. If there is no liquid between the faces, they overheat, and the heat can crack them. Even a perfect face can still fail.
