A pump model and seal size will get the conversation started, but they do not describe the whole duty. For a proper replacement, record the equipment and seal drawing, shaft size, product or fluid, normal and maximum temperature, pressure, speed, solids and operating pattern. Add the current seal materials and what failed.
For food and pharmaceutical work, include CIP chemistry and concentration, hot water or SIP temperature and duration, cycle frequency, product contact requirements and the documents QA needs. Say whether the seal has a flush or barrier system and what fluid it uses. A photo of the removed seal and its failure marks can be more useful than a catalogue number on its own.
With that information I can check whether the old specification still fits, offer a suitable part or explain why a different grade or design is needed. Without it, a like for like quote may reproduce the same problem. I would rather ask one more question than sell the wrong seal.
