Is the Legacy FFKM Brand on Your Approved Vendor List Because It's the Best Option or Because It's Always Been There?
Is the Legacy FFKM Brand on Your Approved Vendor List Because It's the Best Option or Because It's Always Been There?

I've been specifying elastomer seals for 36 years. In that time I've seen legacy branded FFKM solve problems that nothing else could. I've also seen it specified by default on applications where a well-engineered FFKM compound at a fraction of the cost would have performed identically.
The distinction matters, because FFKM is no longer a single-brand market.
The Chemistry Is the Same Class
The chemistry is the same class. The temperature range, , 40°C to +300°C and beyond, is comparable across multiple manufacturers. The chemical resistance profile across aggressive solvents, acids, and steam is equivalent in any properly formulated perfluoroelastomer. What you're paying a significant premium for, in many cases, is brand recognition and the inertia of an approved vendor list that hasn't been reviewed in a decade.
When Legacy Brand Specification Is Justified
That isn't always wrong. In semiconductor fabs and pharmaceutical clean rooms where qualification processes are rigorous and change carries real risk, the legacy brand AVL entry has genuine value. Respect that.
When It's Worth Asking the Question
But in chemical process, oil & gas, and general industrial applications where the engineering requirement is chemical resistance and thermal stability, not a specific brand, the question is worth asking:
When did we last evaluate the alternatives?
FFKM Has Matured
FFKM has matured. Manufacturing quality, approvals, and supply reliability now exist outside the handful of names that dominated the market twenty years ago.
If you're specifying FFKM, it's worth knowing what else qualifies.
